BRT Bus Fares to Increase from February 1 – Lagos State Government

While speaking in an interview in Ikorodu on Thursday, the operator of the Lagos State Bus Rapid Transit scheme, announced plans to increase its fares on all routes in February.

An operator of the Lagos State Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, scheme, Primero Transport Services, has announced plans to increase its fares on all routes in February.

The company’s Managing Director, Fola Tinubu, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ikorodu on Thursday.

Mr. Tinubu said that the increase was as result of its increasing operational cost.

The company has maintained a fare of N75, N120, and N195 from Ikorodu to Mile 12, Fadeyi, and CMS, respectively, since it started operations in November 2015.

According to him, the company will introduce new fares which will take effect between the end of February and early March.

Mr. Tinubu said: “we are going to increase our price because of the situation in the country, our cost has just gone through the roof.

“At this time last year, we bought 1.2 million litres of diesel monthly at N120 per litre, we are now buying at N260; tyres that cost N70,000 each now go for N140,000.

“All the parts used for the buses are imported so they’ve all doubled or tripled in price; and we have no choice but to continue to buy them.

“So, in doing that we have to find a way to make it work because you all know that the buses were bought in China; so, we have a foreign dollar component in our debt portfolio.

“When we bought the buses it was N168 to a US dollar and now we are talking of N470 and we still have to pay the dollar component back.

“So, our debt has increased and our cost of operation has gone through the roof, and we have managed to keep the pricing same for now.

“In fact, right now, we are subsidising every person we carry, and if you are running a business, you can only do that for so long.’’

He said though the company was aware of its social responsibility, but the increase in fares was inevitable if its bus services were to be kept on a sustainable footing.

“The airlines have increased theirs between 200 per cent and 300 per cent but we will not even do 100 per cent.

“So, it is going to be something manageable for people. I will try not to put a figure to that now because the governor still has to approve it, and I don’t want to pre-empt him.

“What I can say is that it’s going to be a marginal increase and not a drastic increase and still less than what the commercial bus operators are charging right now.

“We are not even going to be close to that; but there is no other solution to it because if we do not, it is going to be recipe for disaster down the road,” Mr. Tinubu, said.

NAN reports that operators of the yellow-painted commercial bus currently charge N150, N200, and N350 from Ikorodu to Mile 12, Fadeyi, and CMS, respectively.

On the issue of delays caused during drivers changeover, Mr. Tinubu said the company had introduced the Early Riser System to check the menace.

“We send a total of 75 buses out at 4.30 so that when majority of the busmen are changing over the early risers are still on the wheels.

“As time goes on, we may increase to 100 buses so that that way it would completely eliminate 1.30 p.m. – 2.30 p.m. delay issue.”

Communication Minister, Adebayo Sh!ttu Warns Nigeria Not To Scare Away MTN

The Communication Minister, Adebayo Sh!ttu has warned Nigeria not to scare away MTN. He said this as lawmakers investigate alleged illegal money transfers just three months after the government fined Africa’s biggest telecoms firm over $1 billion.
“Nobody will say that MTN is not important to Nigeria – we must encourage them, we must not scare them away from Nigeria,” Sh!ttu told Reuters in an interview, conducted on Friday.
“The presumption is that they are innocent and we pray they remain innocent,” Sh!ttu said, referring to the investigation. “They must stay.”
MTN, the largest mobile phone firm in Nigeria, threatened to pull out of the country last year during a dispute over unregistered SIM cards before the government agreed to reduce a settlement on the issue by nearly 70 percent to $1 billion, Reuters reports.
The company now faces another potentially hefty penalty if an investigation by Nigeria’s upper house of parliament finds evidence that MTN Group Ltd illegally transferred $13.9 billion out of the West African country between 2006 and 2016, as alleged.
MTN has said it did not break Nigeria’s currency transfer rules.

Avoid Libya for Now, FG Warns All Nigerians…See Details

The Federal Government has warned all Nigerians to be very careful and avoid anything that could lead them to Libya.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa

The Federal Government on Monday warned Nigerians to avoid Libya as penalty for illegal migration to the country is death sentence when caught, reports Punch.

This was made public in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

The call became pertinent as a result of video and pictures being circulated on the alleged killings of black immigrants in Libya.

The presidential aide said although the authenticity of the pictures and videos were yet to be confirmed, Libya has been executing illegal immigrants for years.

The statement read, “The attention  of the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora has been drawn to a video and pictures being circulated on the purported killing of black immigrants in Libya.

“While the authenticity of the pictures and tapes in question cannot be verified, it is a known fact that Libya has been executing alleged black illegal immigrants for years.

“As the Chairman Committee on  Diaspora in the House of Representatives in the Seventh Assembly, we intervened in the case of 24 Nigerians about to be killed in Libya.

“The Committee, in collaboration with SERAP, an NGO,  petitioned the UN, AU, ECOWAS, and Ghadaffi yielded to pressure and released them.

“As at two months ago, NEMA alongside, the Nigerian Embassy in Libya evacuated over 2000 Nigerians from Libya.

“The Nigerian embassy in Libya, working with NEMA has relentlessly intervened in cases involving Nigerians in trouble in Libya and will continue to do so.

“Libyans are dealing with their own struggles as there is no recognised government in place.

“The office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora hereby appeals again to Nigerian migrants to avoid Libya as penalty for illegal migration to Libya, when caught, is usually a death sentence.”

Gambians Angry Over Deal Granted to Former Leader, Jammeh Yahya

Following the departure of former Gambia leader, Yahya Jammeh, some Gambians have expressed anger over the deal allegedly given him.

Former President, Yahya Jammeh

Former Gambian leader Yahya Jammeh flew into exile in Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, making way for democracy in his home country after his repressive 22-year rule there.

Jammeh lost the December 1 election to President Adama Barrow, but spent weeks trying to overturn the election result.

He eventually relinquished power after a delegation of West African leaders convinced him to step down, even as troops from neighbouring countries entered Gambia.

Jammeh left Banjul, the Gambian capital, late Saturday. He had a brief stopover in Guinea before continuing to Equatorial Guinea.

He attached conditions to his departure, demanding protection from future prosecution and leave to contest future elections in Gambia. It is unclear whether these conditions have been granted.

Many Gambians, however, are angry that Jammeh was allowed to leave at all, according to a statement by Mai Ahmad Fatty, an executive member of the Coalition of President Adama Barrow. He added that the coalition was shocked that a cargo plane was allowed to leave with Jammeh’s “loot.”

Fatty rejected claims that Barrow’s coalition had signed a declaration of impunity for Jammeh, allegedly supported by the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He said Barrow had seen what they understood as a draft document and rejected it as a “non-starter.”

“Gambia will neither respect nor honour what was contained in that joint declaration,” said Fatty. “We don’t consider it legally binding on us.”

The African Union, ECOWAS and the United Nations released a joint statement congratulating Gambia on a peaceful transition. The statement also outlined that Jammeh and his family should not become targets and that his rights as a citizen should be respected during what will be temporary stay outside of the country.

Barrow said he plans to establish a commission to investigate potential wrongdoing by Jammeh.

Ahead of his inauguration, Barrow had to flee to Senegal amid security concerns. He will return once his safety is guaranteed. ECOWAS troops remain in Gambia, where they will work with the local military to secure the new president’s return.
