A couple have uploaded photographs of their nine-month old twins on the social media, garnering all sorts of reactions ranging from awe to adoration. They are biracial: one is Black, the other is White.

 

Biracial twins are either born of parents of two races, or as a result of what scientists call “heteropaternal superfecundation.”

 

Heteropaternal superfecundation is said to be common among stray dogs or cats which, if it mates with different breeds of dogs or cats, can have litters in which every puppy has a different sire (father).

 

Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Columbia University, Dr. Hilda Hutcherson, says it is possible for a woman who has had $ex with men of two different races to conceive such pair of babies. In one scientific study on humans, the frequency of such incidents was 2.4 per cent among dizygotic twins whose parents had been involved in paternity suits.

 

One of such rare occurrences was that of a 19-year-old Texas woman who gave birth to twins of different fathers in 2008.

 

How it happens: Every month, a woman’s ovary releases one egg that can be fertilised by one sperm. But in the case of the Texan woman, she released two eggs. And since sperm can remain alive and well and viable for up to five days in the reproductive tract, if a woman has s*x with different men within those five days, the sperm from two men can fertilise the two different eggs. For the Texas woman, sperm from the men of two different races she had s*x with ended up fertilising her two eggs during the separate $exual encounters.

 

The result was a set of biracial twins, both of whom were male.

 

In the case of the Illinois twins, however, their parents are of mixed race — a Black father and a White mother.

As reported in many foreign media, one of the twins, Kalani, inherited her mother Whitney Meyer’s lighter complexion, while twin sister Jarani got her darker complexion from her father, Tomas Dean.

 

They were born in April 2016.

 

Scientists say that a biracial couple expecting twins have approximately one in 500 chance of their twins being born with different skin colours.

 

According to Wikipedia, mixed twins are fraternal twins born to multiracial families that differ in skin colour and other traits considered to be racial features.

 

The online resource site explains that in humans, a relatively small number of genes are thought to be responsible for human skin colour.

 

Gene variants, otherwise called “alleles,” are responsible for the differences in the level of melanin found in human skin. Melanin is a dark brown or black substance that is a natural part of people’s skin, hair and eyes.

 

In some groups, there are high frequencies of dark skin alleles, while others have high frequencies of light skin alleles. The parents of biracial twins, who are typically both of mixed race, have a combination of alleles for light and dark skin in their genome.

 

In terms of fertilisation of the eggs during s*x, researchers say each sperm (from the father) or egg cell (from the mother) possesses a random selection of genes from either parent.

 

Even though it rarely happens, a sperm or egg may randomly acquire, for example, mostly alleles that confer light skin coloration or mostly alleles that confer dark skin coloration. When this happens, fraternal twins can differ from each other quite dramatically in terms of skin colour or other physical characteristics.

 

Fraternal twins are twins that developed from separate fertilised eggs, they are genetically distinct and may not necessarily be of the same s*x.

America has always been aspirational to me. Even when I chafed at its hypocrisies, it somehow always seemed sure, a nation that knew what it was doing, refreshingly free of that anything-can-happen existential uncertainty so familiar to developing nations. But no longer. The election of Donald Trump has flattened the poetry in America’s founding philosophy: the country born from an idea of freedom is to be governed by an unstable, stubbornly uninformed, authoritarian demagogue. And in response to this there are people living in visceral fear, people anxiously trying to discern policy from bluster, and people kowtowing as though to a new king. Things that were recently pushed to the corners of America’s political space—overt racism, glaring misogyny, anti-intellectualism—are once again creeping to the center.

 

Now is the time to resist the slightest extension in the boundaries of what is right and just. Now is the time to speak up and to wear as a badge of honor the opprobrium of bigots. Now is the time to confront the weak core at the heart of America’s addiction to optimism; it allows too little room for resilience, and too much for fragility. Hazy visions of “healing” and “not becoming the hate we hate” sound dangerously like appeasement. The responsibility to forge unity belongs not to the denigrated but to the denigrators. The premise for empathy has to be equal humanity; it is an injustice to demand that the maligned identify with those who question their humanity.

 

America loves winners, but victory does not absolve. Victory, especially a slender one decided by a few thousand votes in a handful of states, does not guarantee respect. Nobody automatically deserves deference on ascending to the leadership of any country. American journalists know this only too well when reporting on foreign leaders—their default mode with Africans, for instance, is nearly always barely concealed disdain. President Obama endured disrespect from all quarters. By far the most egregious insult directed toward him, the racist movement tamely termed “birtherism,” was championed by Trump.

 

Yet, a day after the election, I heard a journalist on the radio speak of the vitriol between Obama and Trump. No, the vitriol was Trump’s. Now is the time to burn false equivalencies forever. Pretending that both sides of an issue are equal when they are not is not “balanced” journalism; it is a fairy tale—and, unlike most fairy tales, a disingenuous one.

 

Now is the time to refuse the blurring of memory. Each mention of “gridlock” under Obama must be wrought in truth: that “gridlock” was a deliberate and systematic refusal of the Republican Congress to work with him. Now is the time to call things what they actually are, because language can illuminate truth as much as it can obfuscate it. Now is the time to forge new words. “Alt-right” is benign. “White-supremacist right” is more accurate.

 

Now is the time to talk about what we are actually talking about. “Climate contrarian” obfuscates. “Climate-change denier” does not. And because climate change is scientific fact, not opinion, this matters.

 

Now is the time to discard that carefulness that too closely resembles a lack of conviction. The election is not a “simple racism story,” because no racism story is ever a “simple” racism story, in which grinning evil people wearing white burn crosses in yards. A racism story is complicated, but it is still a racism story, and it is worth parsing. Now is not the time to tiptoe around historical references. Recalling Nazism is not extreme; it is the astute response of those who know that history gives both context and warning.

 

Now is the time to recalibrate the default assumptions of American political discourse. Identity politics is not the sole preserve of minority voters. This election is a reminder that identity politics in America is a white invention: it was the basis of segregation. The denial of civil rights to black Americans had at its core the idea that a black American should not be allowed to vote because that black American was not white. The endless questioning, before the election of Obama, about America’s “readiness” for a black President was a reaction to white identity politics. Yet “identity politics” has come to be associated with minorities, and often with a patronizing undercurrent, as though to refer to nonwhite people motivated by an irrational herd instinct. White Americans have practiced identity politics since the inception of America, but it is now laid bare, impossible to evade.

 

Now is the time for the media, on the left and right, to educate and inform. To be nimble and alert, clear-eyed and skeptical, active rather than reactive. To make clear choices about what truly matters.

 

Now is the time to put the idea of the “liberal bubble” to rest. The reality of American tribalism is that different groups all live in bubbles. Now is the time to acknowledge the ways in which Democrats have condescended to the white working class—and to acknowledge that Trump condescends to it by selling it fantasies. Now is the time to remember that there are working-class Americans who are not white and who have suffered the same deprivations and are equally worthy of news profiles. Now is the time to remember that “women” does not equal white women. “Women” must mean all women.

 

Now is the time to elevate the art of questioning. Is the only valid resentment in America that of white males? If we are to be sympathetic to the idea that economic anxieties lead to questionable decisions, does this apply to all groups? Who exactly are the élite?

 

Now is the time to frame the questions differently. If everything remained the same, and Hillary Clinton were a man, would she still engender an overheated, outsized hostility? Would a woman who behaved exactly like Trump be elected? Now is the time to stop suggesting that $exism was absent in the election because white women did not overwhelmingly vote for Clinton. Misogyny is not the sole preserve of men.

 

The case for women is not that they are inherently better or more m0ral. It is that they are half of humanity and should have the same opportunities—and be judged according to the same standards—as the other half. Clinton was expected to be perfect, according to contradictory standards, in an election that became a referendum on her likability.

 

Now is the time to ask why America is far behind many other countries (see: Rwanda) in its representation of women in politics. Now is the time to explore mainstream attitudes toward women’s ambition, to ponder to what extent the ordinary political calculations that all politicians make translate as m0ral failures when we see them in women. Clinton’s careful calibration was read as deviousness. But would a male politician who is carefully calibrated—Mitt Romney, for example—merely read as carefully calibrated?

 

Now is the time to be precise about the meanings of words. Trump saying “They let you do it” about assaulting women does not imply consent, because consent is what happens before an act.

 

Now is the time to remember that, in a wave of dark populism sweeping the West, there are alternative forms. Bernie Sanders’s message did not scapegoat the vulnerable. Obama rode a populist wave before his first election, one marked by a remarkable inclusiveness. Now is the time to counter lies with facts, repeatedly and unflaggingly, while also proclaiming the greater truths: of our equal humanity, of decency, of compassion. Every precious ideal must be reiterated, every obvious argument made, because an ugly idea left unchallenged begins to turn the color of normal. It does not have to be like this.

This can lead to abnormal tissue growth and other changes to cells within your cervix.

 

Researchers from the University of Texas studied the relationship between douching and HPV in 1,271 women aged between 20 and 49.

 

The shocking results revealed that douching nearly doubles a woman’s risk of contracting ovarian cancer.

 

The nationwide US study, by the National Institute of Environmental Sciences, is the first to link ovarian cancer to the washing ritual.

 

The NHS advices women against douching entirely as it can also make them more susceptible to infections and inflammations. 

 

Professor Ronnie Lamont, spokesperson for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, writes on the NHS website: "The vagina contains more bacteria than anywhere else in the body after the bowel, but the bacteria are there for a reason.

"I can’t think of any circumstances where douches are helpful, because all they do is wash out everything that’s in the vagina, including all the healthy bacteria."

 

Around 7,300 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year in the UK but the survival rate is just 35%.

To prove that he is really fighting corruption in Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari will have to arrest some former presidents and ex-governors, so says former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Humphrey Asobie.

Premium Times reports that Asobie made the call as a guest speaker at a roundtable discussion with the theme “Corruption: an impediment to the sustainable development goals”.

Asobie said at the event organised by United States Embassy for the International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD) 2016 that such a move would add the needed impetus to drive the Buhari government towards victory in the fight against corruption.

“Pick OBJ, IBB, (Rotimi) Amaechi, (Bola) Tinubu, Abdulsalami (Abubakar) and Raji (Fashola). They will all think you are mad when you say it,” Asobie, a former chairman of the board of the Nigerian Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI), said.

He added:

Corruption is systemic in Nigeria; it’s not just a few certain individuals. It also includes the anti-corruption agencies, they have a problem of corruption.

There was this particular case of a young girl whose mother rented a 2-bedroom flat for her in Accra. My friend, said news just got to him this week, that this student slept with 5 (five) guys at the same time and was still begging for more. She is always high on hard drugs. And, the mother, back in Nigeria will be boasting of her daughter, who is studying in Ghana. Oh, so pathetic.

Sadly to say, many of these young girls have become international prostitutes and seriously hooked on drugs. I mean what I am saying. And many people in Accra can bear me witness. Some of the mushroom universities attended by the students lack hostel facilities and the students are forced to rent accommodation thereby according them too much privacy which they are not matured enough to handle.

This issues also involves our boys. Some have become drug addicts, school dropouts and they still collect school fees from their parents.

The group on Tuesday invaded the Kudeti area of Ibadan, to attack the youths in the area.

 

According to Punch Metro, they even went ahead to cut off the hand of one of their victims.

 

A resident of the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the hooligans invaded the area because youths in the communities refused to join the group after several attempts to woo them.

A victim, Sikiru Muftau, also known as Alase, had the lower part of one of his hands severed completely and they made away with the part.

“There was commotion in the communities and people fled the area for fear of further attack. I am also moving out because the police refused to come throughout the attack that lasted for more than five hours,” he said.

 

It was learned that relatives of the victim had been calling on the suspected hooligans to return the severed part of the hand.

 

Another resident, however, said Muftau was a factional leader of the group, adding that the fight was between two rival factions.

 

When contacted, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said the command was aware of the incident, adding that the severed hand had been returned.

 

“We are aware of the visit of some hooligans to the community and we are investigating the attack.

“I have the information that the hand has been returned. The truth is that no official complaint was lodged at any of the command’s police stations until on Wednesday morning. We have yet to apprehend any of the attackers. However,  investigation is ongoing,” he said.
